In the world of comic books, origin stories inform the reader of the identity and motivations of heroes and villains (thankfully, we only have the former here). Like Spider-Man or Captain America, your origin story is important as it defines who you are today. Learn about the experiences, people, and influences that shaped Concord's Gabby Lopez by reading below!
I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago. I went to school in Chicago, then moved to Iowa for a year before settling in Kansas City three years ago.
Growing up, my family always ate dinner together. No matter how late my parents worked, we would wait until everyone was home. My brother or I would set the table, and my parents took turns making food, depending on who got home first. This tradition of sharing meals has always been important to me.
When I visit home, my favorite thing to do is cook and enjoy the same dishes we often shared as a family. I frequently suggest making pozole, chilaquiles, or chiles rellenos.
My family has had the greatest influence on me. Many of my values, such as the importance of family, kindness, and teamwork, come from what my parents instilled in me. I believe in the power of teamwork and the importance of supporting one another to achieve greater things together.
I enjoy traveling to visit family and friends in Illinois and Mexico. I was born in Mexico, and most of my extended family still lives there. We often visit Mexico City, Quintana Roo, Guadalajara, and Cuernavaca. Growing up, we spent most of our summers and school breaks in Mexico to spend time with extended family.
Moving out of town has significantly shaped me. It gave me time to reflect on my priorities, develop my individuality, and appreciate the quality time I get to spend with family when I visit.
I love food and enjoy trying new things. I can’t pinpoint a single favorite because I enjoy exploring new dishes. I often rotate through different types of foods I haven’t had in a while.
Although I didn't start in analytics, my data-driven thinking led me to it. I started my career as a trade compliance analyst, and by building data-driven solutions and workflows, I was recognized as a candidate for the company's BI team. Transitioning into a team under IT opened doors to more access to systems and data, allowing me to build more complex data solutions.
I enjoy trying new things and learning new hobbies. However, reading has been a consistent hobby for me. I appreciate the diversity of books and the ability to learn about various topics and perspectives.
So far this year, I have read:
A significant accomplishment for me was transitioning my career into data analytics. It validated my self-taught learning and demonstrated my ability to contribute to the team and department.
